The information and the pictures taken from puppy mills on this page are very graphic and are very disturbing
Some pictures might make you cry.
However there are pictures so graphic then the ones we have chosen but we have chosen not to include them because they are too disturbing, but we have put some pictures to give you an idea of these mills.
Just like you, we had no idea how bad mills really were, puppy mill was only a word to us, until we did some research and felt that people ought to have an informed choice.
We wrote this article because we want people to understand where pet stores and dog brokers get their puppies from because no one could believe how badly people treat dogs and cats all to make money!
*This page should not be viewed or read by children.
The primary reason people buy a puppy is to improve their life and add joy by loving a little creature.
It is normal to feel some stress when first bringing a new puppy home, as you are brand new parents and may not be sure of how to raise this little one to be healthy and train him/her to be obedient and friendly.
But for the most part a healthy puppy will add joy, along with a little extra work of course until they are trained.
However no new "puppy parent" needs the extra stress of buying a "sickly puppy" with health issues and serious behavioral issues!
People make the common mistake of buying the cheapest puppy they can find thinking they will save money,
however in the long run, they end up spending far more on vet bills trying to repair their poor quality puppy,
not to mention, behavioural problems and added mental and emotional stress along the way,
when they could have invested in a high quality puppy and saved themselves much unexpected vet bills
and heartache in the long run!!
What is a puppy and a kitten mill?
Puppy mills are large commercial breeding operations that house and breed many, many dogs and cats (hundreds and some upwards of a thousand) are commonly referred to as ‘puppy mills’ or ‘kitten mills’.
The purpose of these mills is to mass produce puppies and kittens to sell- via pet stores, way of the Internet and now more and more through dog brokers because people trust dog brokers more then pet stores.
So what’s wrong with that?
Breeders who are focused on mass producing puppies and kittens do not provide proper care for the animals.
Dogs, puppies, cats and kittens may be housed in cages stacked one on top of the other, and the cages are frequently overcrowded and filthy. To increase profit margins, these mills cut corners by providing minimal veterinary care, poor quality or limited food and water, inadequate ventilation and lighting, and no bedding or protection from the elements. Many animals become sick, thin, injured, diseased and develop behavioral issues. These animals have limited or no human contact, exercise or socialization for these animals.
These mills have barrels of dead dogs and cats stacked one on top of another!!
The problems involved with adopting a puppy from:
1). A pet store
2.) A DOG BROKER ( Dog Flipper)
3.) Someone who is selling the puppy for "their friend".
4.) A breeding service
5.) Any person selling a puppy without owning the parents of the puppy.
6.) The person you buy your puppy from must own the parents of that puppy or they are not the breeder and should not be trusted.
A broker or breeding service is the same thing, they are people who do not breed puppies.
They repurchase puppies from breeders and resell to the public.
What's wrong with that?
They make great claims that they buy from the highest quality breeders.
Reputable breeders sell their own puppies, they never entrust a broker or breeding service to place their puppies.
IF THE SELLER DOES NOT OWN THE PARENTS TO THE PUPPY THEY ARE SELLING THE PUPPY HAS BEEN PURCHASED FROM A PUPPY MILL.
They are going to make great claims that this is not the case or you would not buy their puppy.
ONLY REPUTABLE BREEDERS SELL THEIR OWN PUPPIES AND OWN BOTH PARENTS.
The puppy is not their own!! It comes from one of these terrible puppy/kitten mills.
In fact it means that the real breeder of the puppies cannot sell the puppies themselves because their parents cannot be shown and the place where they are breeding these dogs are obviously unfit for the public.
This because if they could sell their own puppies, they would certainly not resort to sharing their profits with a pet store or a dog broker.
Reputable breeders sell their own dogs.
Reputable breeders love their dogs and will gladly show you the parents of your puppy when the puppy is an appropriate age.
BROKERS GET THEIR DOGS FROM MILLS BECAUSE ONLY A MILL WOULD BE WILLING TO SELL TO BROKERS AND PET STORES.
***REPUTABLE BREEDERS WOULD NEVER ALLOW SOMEONE ELSE TO FIND A HOME FOR THEIR BELOVED PUPPIES THAT THEY HAVE RAISED.***
RATHER THEY WANT TO SPEAK WITH OR MEET THE PROSECTIVE ADOPTEES TO THEIR PUPPY PERSONNALLY, SO THEY KNOW WHO WILL BE CARING FOR THE PUPPY THEY HAVE RAISED.
In some cases the parents may be very old and have serious health problems.
In most cases these type of breeders over breed, including breeding into old age!!
We have even heard of people breeding 7, 8 & 9 year old dogs!
This would be the equivalent of a woman having a child at 63 years of age, how good is the child's health going to be?
Your puppy cannot be a normal puppy emotionally because
your puppies mother was not capable of raising your puppy properly because
a mother raised in terrible conditions cannot possibly provide proper mothering skills to her puppies because she has so many of her own "issues" she is trying to deal with on an everyday on-going basis such as:
1.) inadequate nutrition, NOT ENOUGH FOOD to cut cost
2.) cramped and very crowed space, many dogs in one tiny cage. (100's to 1000's of dogs and cats)
3.) no exercise from being in a tiny cage, poor rest
4.) not enough fresh air
5.) poor health due to over breeding, many mothers have grown tumors from excessive breeding
and are breed into old age until they can no longer produce, then they are destroyed for failing to produce more puppies!
6.) unsanitary conditions
7.) no love or emotional comfort from her owner, many of these dogs are never petted or touched or hugged. NO LOVE!
8.) your puppy has been separated at an age from it's mother that is too young and will have life long anxiety
9.) these dogs NEVER get to run outside and play.
10.) lack of adequate medicine and veterinarian help to cut costs
11.) poor light
12.) not enough heat or shelter from the elements
This picture is just one example of several puppy mills that pet stores and dog broker's support.
MASS PRODUCTION OF PUPPIES AND KITTENS RESULT IN DEAD DOGS AND CATS HEAPED AND PILED
WHO SUPPORTS PUPPY AND KITTEN MILLS?
These mills are supported by brokers, pet stores and ultimately the public,
choosing to buy a dog from them.
Some people feel that if they buy a dog from a pet store or a broker they are "rescuing" a dog, really you are aiding the mills to stay in business because the puppy you purchase makes room for another puppy. As long as the public is willing to buy from brokers,
mills stay in business.
Please MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE! Please buy from a breeder that cares about their dogs and looks after them and their puppies.
Why would someone buy from a pet store? CONVENIENCE.
Why would someone buy from a broker? COST AND CONVENIENCE.
Notice how brokers always have puppies available that are ALWAYS 'READY TO GO".
They are also inexpensive.
The reason they always have puppies READY TO GO, is because they will NEVER RUN OUT of puppies even though they write clever ads stating, "just one or two puppies left!"
Just as soon as they sell these they get more from the mills because THE MILLS NEVER RUN OUT of puppies ready to be sold.
They will reduce the cost of the puppies to as low as $500 or even less to ensure they sell so they can sell more.
I once went to the mall, saw some puppies there, the very next day, the same pet store, had a whole different set of puppies "READY TO GO"! SHOCKING! The brokers are the same, they always have an average of 5 litters of all small breed puppies always "Ready to go" and then always new litter "Ready to go" the very next week as soon as they sell the first batch.
NO DOG BROKER or pet store IS NOT GOING TO ADMIT HE GOT THE DOG FROM A MILL
Obviously, they know you wouldn't buy the dog from them.
You will have a terrible time trying to train a puppy if you buy from a broker or a pet store.
These dogs have been deprived of the most basic need, to do "their business" far away from where they sleep.
It is absolutely disgusting the conditions these poor dogs have to live in day in and day out!
These dogs are from a puppy mill!
Dog brokers know very little about dogs. All their information is what they have heard because they are not actual breeders and have no experience raising puppies properly.
So the brokers study the ads that breeders have written and their websites and skillfully copy their ads so they can sell the puppies they have bought from a mill.
They are masters at "COPYING" real breeders ads to make their puppies appear that they have come from good homes to be able to sell them. Many believe the brokers when they say they have purchased them from a good breeder,
BUT GOOD BREEDERS DON'T SELL TO BROKERS, ONLY MILLS DO.
In fact, BROKERS are copiers at the most basic level.
They don't even "breed", they copy breeders by having puppies to sell and get a hold of cheap puppies and resell them!
They are so bold to state the weight of the parents, like they know who they are, when they have never even met the dogs parents.
Some brokers won't admit they are brokers, they claim to be a breeder. However you must insist on seeing at least the mother.
And if they make an excuse how she is not able to being seen, then do not buy the puppy!
Like a human mother resembles her child, every mother of a puppy will resemble the puppy and she will act like the mother.
It is very obvious to see the love between a mother and her puppy, the bond is very strong!
If the dog does not look like the puppy or have a really strong bond to the puppy, then she is not the puppy's mother!
These brokers have 4-5 different litters of puppies all at the same time, different small breeds, all ready to go!!
But they claim that they only have one or two puppies left,
when they have many puppies and will get many more as soon as the ones he has sell.
They claim the dogs are fed good food, raised right, a proper age, properly socialized, on & on & on.
They are able to fool people by just claiming they don't support mills or kennels.
The puppy was not fed a high quality food because it came from a puppy mill, that resold the puppy to the broker for $250 a puppy.
It is impossible to raise puppies properly and sell them for so cheaply. That would not even cover the vet cost or the food.
If the puppy has no mother or father, when you view it, then you have no way of knowing what you just bought!
You took their word for it & all they are interested in is selling the pup so they can get more and resell them!
Rather they are going to claim they don't support puppy mills or large kennels, of course.
They will always claim they got their puppies from small private breeders. This is illogical. All breeders sell their own puppies.
(Every kennel sells their own puppies), only mills do not.
But if you reason on this logically you will conclude that he had to get his puppies from a mill.
No private breeder is going to have a never ending supply of puppies ready to go every single week!!! IMPOSSIBLE
And add to that a variety of tiny breeds as well, ex shih-poos, yorkies, maltese, morkies, mal-shi ect ect.
Only mills can supply brokers with litter ready to go.
Even worse these brokers claim that the puppies are of a decent age to release them, ex 9 weeks,
but you really have no way of knowing this is true. Mills never hang on to their puppies for 9 weeks of age,
they let them go at 6-8 weeks max for the simple reason the puppies are getting to expensive to feed.
REMEMBER THIS BASIC RULE: NO PARENTS of the puppy on site has to and could only be from a MILL and not from a Private Breeder.
Every breeder can sell his/her own puppies, even if they live far away from Toronto.
People love little dogs and private breeders sell their dogs local or ship them if they have to,
they NEVER give them to a broker.
Private breeders that have raised their dogs right cannot afford to sell their dogs to brokers, they would go out of business, they must sell their own dogs, to stay in business.
ONLY MILLS ARE WILLING TO SELL TO BROKERS AND PET STORES
How do you know the brokers buy from mills?
Because how could breeders have so many puppies of so many different small breeds always ready to go every single week and as soon as they sell they are quickly replaced with more young "puppies ready to go".
If these breeders were reputable they would surely sell their own puppies, not sharing their profits,
rather they have mass volume of puppies, so they need a broker to buy them up, sell them for them, as more are coming next week and the week after that.
THESE BROKERS GET THEIR PUPPIES AT LOW COST FOR $200-$300 ONLY & RESELL THEM THEM AT A PROFIT.
BROKERS ARE SO BOLD AS TO CLAIM TO FEED THEIR PUPPIES HIGH QUALITY FOODS,
These brokers are copying quality breeders, to make their puppies appear equal.
But keep in mind they have only had the puppy for less then a week.
These pups were not raised on high quality foods, nor their nursing mom, nor their pregnant mom while she was pregnant with them,
because mills cant afford expensive food to give to all their bitches, sires, and nursing moms and puppies and then turn around and sell their puppies to brokers for $200-$300!!!
If the mills cared enough to feed their dogs properly they would care enough about their environment and now they wouldn't be a mill anymore.
Mills don't care about dogs, puppies nor their environment, only about making a profit, and the brokers that support these mills are the same, they only care about moving their inventory to get more puppies to sell!
They certainly do not care if the dog is healthy, carries genetic problems or is inbreed or not.
How could they keep that many dogs and puppies, well looked after, feed them properly and then sell them at low cost to brokers, so the broker can resell them to the public and still turn a profit.
If you don't believe BROKERS buy their dogs from mills try running your own ad in the Montreal area
with the most used advertising paper for puppies, that starts with a "K" and ends with an "i" and has a "j" in the middle to buy puppies and you their will find that there is no shortage of available puppies for $300,
in fact, the more volume you buy, the better price you will get. And you will not be able to meet the parents either!
And if you saw the mother, you definitely would not the buy the puppy!
This poor little pitiful mother has been rescued from a quebec puppy mill! Makes you want to weep!
The last picture is this Maltese in recovery. She will never have good health.
Dog brokers and pet stores get their puppies from Quebec and then resell them in the Toronto area.
Puppy mills start breeding females on their first heat, when they are too young to be breed and breed them every heat,
when they should be given breaks and they breed them into old age and then finally destroy them when they can no longer give any more puppies!!
Unfortunately, so sad, these mills exist and there puppies are sold locally. It's your choice, please don't support these disgusting mills.
The above picture shows how these poor dogs never touch the ground!
We strongly urge you to buy from a responsible breeder that cares about their dogs, the puppies they give birth to and a breeder that strives to breed strong healthy dogs and wants to improve the breed where possible.
These people work hard to have healthy dogs and they care about their dogs and hopefully care about what they are breeding and the kind of puppies they are producing,
rather then cutting corners to make as much money as they can, like brokers and pet stores do.
Breeders that care sell their OWN puppies and are usually proud of their dogs.
It may be convenient, to buy from a broker because he has a dog available the day you decide you are going to get a dog, and he will have them very affordable, as he needs to "move them" quickly.
But really in the long run, you may end up spending far more on this puppy and have life long behavioral problems with your dog, perhaps the puppy won't die, but it may have poor health for life.
One lady even told me that she bought a puppy that she thought was healthy,
not from the breeder and ended up spending $1500 in vet costs,
only to have the puppy die in the end!
If you cannot see the mother of the puppy and the litter to see that it is healthy,
do not buy the puppy!
I know of one lady that purchased "the most healthy" puppy in the litter from a broker because the puppy was "so affordable".
She said she picked him because he looked the best and the rest of the litter "looked sickly".
Others have terrible problems with temperament, lack of socialization and training.
Sadly, their is no end to the problems with a puppy mill dog.
The WHOLE litter should be HEALTHY, either they are healthy puppies or they are not!
Brokers get around "health" issues by giving their "guarantees".
So people buy from them thinking they have "nothing to lose".
I guess if you want to risk the emotional trauma of having to use their guarantee and possibly $2000 expense its ok.
But they sure cant guarantee behavioural problems and these health guarantees are so basic.
But in general their is no way these dogs can have any measure of health because of the environment they are coming out of.
Reputable breeders do not have puppies "ready to go" every week, they can't possibly own that many dogs,
so you may have to wait a while for a good quality puppy, but in the end, it is worth it.
After all when you buy certain purchases you may have to wait 4-6 weeks to get what you ordered,
but you wait patiently anyway>
How much more so is it worth it to wait for your dog, that is not furniture, appliance, kitchen cupboards, tile or a custom car, or bike but rather he/she is an addition to your family!
Families have to wait 9 months for your own child to be born!
If you adopt you may wait years for a child to join your family.
Good things are worth waiting for!
Even young parents can have several compounding health problems if their health has been neglected
and not cared for properly, or breed too early and over breeding is a factor as well.
These and other bad conditions such as over crowding & caging.
Also many of these "dog parents" are cooped up in cages all day & night, unable to get enough exercise.
Lack of fresh air and other neglected health issues often lead to severe health decline,
These puppy parents have never seen the outside or touched the ground with their paws!!!
Because of these conditions and others the owners of the puppies do not want you to see any parents,
especially the mother of your puppy!
They solve the problem by having a 2nd party, a broker or a pet store to resell their puppies for them.
Some brokers will not admit to being brokers and rather claim to be selling the dog for their "parents", "a friend" out of town, a "sister" etc.
They may even have pictures they claim are of the parents, but there is no way of knowing that is your puppies parents.
These people who are re-selling dogs, are ready and have pictures on hand to explain the absence of the mother.
A lot of these brokers are known to use pictures from "show dogs" .
One client even told me that the broker claimed that that was her in the picture "showing" the mother,
when her head was chopped off in the photo!
In fact she didn't even have the mother with her, she said the mother belonged to her sister.
Fortunately the buyer was not deceived. In fact this particular broker had more then one kind of puppy, both ready to go!!
"Dog brokers" can claim that they have purchased their "high quality" puppies
from private breeders that live far away and not puppy mills.
However if these supposed quality puppies really are such high quality the real breeders would be better off selling their own puppies then selling them cheaply to dog brokers,
separating them from their mothers and driving the puppies great stressful distances at such an early age to be resold.
Also dog brokers cannot guarantee any kind of quality because they did not personally breed the puppy, nor do they know anything about this dog because they have only just purchased the puppy themselves!!
These "dog brokers" then resell them, and keep most of the profit, the cost you paid for the pup did not go into the pup's food,
nor the health of the parents as the real breeders sold them for very cheap,
rather the cost all goes back to the broker, he makes far more then the actual breeder per puppy.
Because the real breeder sells them for so cheap to the dog broker he must sell high volumes of puppies not quality.
A broker NEVER runs out of puppies, as soon as he is short he quickly makes another trip and gets more puppies!
And usually these brokers have several different kinds of small breed puppies all at the same time, even 5 or 6 different breeds!
Puppy mills always have an abundance of puppies because they have 100's and even 1000's of dogs!!
DO NOT EXPECT to get a QUALITY PUPPY from POOR QUALITY PARENTS or a HEALTHY PUPPY from a PUPPY MILL!
Rather, expect the unexpected!
Health problems, all kinds of training problems & personality problems from puppies being raised in the wrong environment.
These breeders are releasing their puppies at an unacceptable early age to give the reseller
enough time to resell a young puppy which can result in not only poor health but also serious behavioral problems.
You can be sure that these kind of breeders that give up their young puppies to strangers or "a friend" to resell them
are not taking into account the extra nutrition that a pregnant and nursing mother needs!
You can be sure the breeder raised this kind of puppy and its pregnant and nursing mother on the poorest,
cheapest food possible!
You can also be sure that these breeders over breed their mothers.
An over bred mom cannot possibly recover her health and cannot possibly give any healthy puppies
as her health is already suffering!!
Most of these breeders have started breeding these mothers before they even reached 1 years of age,
they are very greedy, so they do not wait until the dog is mature and breed her on the 1st heat.
A female that is old enough to have her 1st heat can easily get pregnant,
however her own adult teeth have not even finished developing yet!
Dogs breed under 1 year of age is equivalent to a 12-14 year old teenage having a baby,
she has never finished maturing herself!
These poor dogs breed at an early age had to give life to a litter of puppies and then nurse them,
robbing her own body of the nutrition it needed to finish maturing herself
and then these breeders continue to breed them constantly.
Is this who you want to be the mother of your puppy???
A lot of these adults have poor health, but these breeders cannot even afford the medications needed
to correct certain problems so they are passed on to your new puppy.
Finally ask yourself: What kind of breeder entrust others to sell his/her puppies for them?
Puppies resold without parents have had the worst possible start which is so important to future health.
NO REPUTABLE BREEDER WILL TRUST SOMEONE ELSE TO PLACE THEIR PUPPIES!
We personally talk to each and every potential adopter of one of our puppies before we consider placing one of our puppies with them forever.
Our puppies are just too precious and we have invested too much into them to have a dog broker or pet store sell them.
We want to meet our puppies adopters so we are reassured the best possible loving forever home for them!
